Job Title: Digital Media Specialist 

Department: SBTDC

Organization Overview

The North Carolina SBTDC@NCSU is a business advisory resource for growing and developing businesses. The SBTDC operates in formal partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration, Defense Logistics Agency and others, making it a unique and valued asset in the economic development infrastructure of North Carolina. Our staff establishes valued relationships with SBTDC clients designed to produce meaningful and effective results in our work with small and mid-sized businesses.

 

Job Overview

The SBTDC@NCSU seeks two Digital Media Specialists to support a new initiative offering specialized support for client companies wishing to build or enhance their online presence. Working directly with SBTDC clients alongside SBTDC General Business Counselors, the specialist will conduct digital media audits and prepare insights and recommendations to help clients increase online visibility. Specialists will work with General Business Counselors to ensure digital media recommendations align with client’s overall business objectives such as increasing sales, growing market share or reaching new market segments. 

 

Expectations

  • Review and agree to the SBTDC’s Standards of Conduct policy with respect to client confidentiality, conflicts of interest and best practices associated with becoming a trusted advisor.

  • Be immersed in the day-to-day operations of the SBTDC’s business counseling program, participating in organizational activities, counseling and training beyond specialists’ primary focus area. 

  • Put into practice the concepts, methods, and techniques learned in the classroom to support the SBTDC’s mission and goals. 

  • Work with SBTDC’s team of professionals to set and pursue individual professional growth goals.

  • Collaborate with all relevant SBTDC staff members and partners statewide to support the business development needs of small and mid-sized business clients.

  • Mentoring: Work closely with expert business counselors for learning and mentorship.

 

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth digital media audit, evaluating client companies’ website (content + analytics), social media (strategy, platforms, content and analytics), paid advertising, earned media and other aspects.

  • Conduct competitive/market research using SBTDC tools as well as resources including IBISWorld, VerticalIQ and others. 

  • Develop actionable recommendations for SBTDC staff and client companies based on research findings.

  • Create client-facing report summarizing audit findings and recommendations.

  • Work with SBTDC staff and client to create implementation plans for new digital media ideas. Implementation plans may include timing, budget, content and strategy recommendations.

  • Deliver recommendations to clients, fielding questions and incorporating feedback.

 

Skills & Experience

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace including Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Drive and Gmail.

  • Experience creating and/or posting social media content in a professional capacity (can include work done with student organizations, non-profit groups, volunteer roles, internships, etc.).

  • Experience with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.

  • Experience using Google Analytics to assess website traffic patterns.

  • Preferred: experience with Google Ads, Facebook Ads and other digital paid media. 

  • Preferred: familiarity with marketing automation tools such as Hubspot, Drip, Hootsuite, Mailchimp and others.

 

Qualifications 

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to plan, organize, and work well with people. 

  • Self-directed and self-motivated with the ability to multi-task and set priorities.

  • Possess strong work ethic with qualitative and quantitative research skills. 

  • Strong oral and written communication skills to be used in preparing reports and making presentations.

 

Education

  • Currently enrolled in as a part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate student.

  • Preferred: December 2021 or May 2022 graduates 

 

Additional Details

  • Timing: Job will begin in March 2021 and conclude in December 2021

  • Pay: $12.50 per hour 

  • Schedule: During the semester, students will work no more than 20 hours per week; during the summer, students may work up to 40 hours per week. Exact schedule TBD upon hire, with most hours worked within “business hours” (Mon-Fri, 8a-6p ET). 

  • Logistics: The SBTDC@NCSU office is located on NCSU Centennial Campus. Currently, the team is working remotely due to COVID-19. Digital Media Specialists will be expected to follow NCSU and SBTDC staff protocols for remote work and/or return to office. Student Specialists will be expected to have computer and internet access for their work with the SBTDC.
