This boot camp is for Working Professional MBA and Master of Management Marketing Analytics students who want to express the impact that they have made for an internal hiring manager in the two primary communication vehicles – resumes and interviews.
This boot camp is divided into two sessions. You may attend either or both sessions, you do not have to attend the entire day.
8:30 – 11:30pm Resume Impact – Write Summary Statements and Bullet Points That Show You Make Things Happen
A résumé is a brief document that summarizes your education, employment history, and experiences that are relevant to your qualifications for a particular job for which you are applying. On the average, a reviewer scans a résumé in six seconds, so your résumé needs to be persuasive and perfect.
This boot camp is focused on piquing the interest of an MBA or MMA employer by focusing on your aspirational value rather than your past responsibilities. We know that there is not an absolute correct way to write summaries and bullet points; however, there are some generally acknowledged best practices in the management/leadership space. For many students these best practices may not be consistent with the résumé writing strategies that have brought you here.
This is a highly experiential boot camp (you will be doing a lot of personal résumé writing and small group critiquing of other résumés). At the conclusion of the boot camp, you should be able to show your leadership value and impact to the reader for the promotion opportunity. Topics which may be included (but not limited to) are:
11:30am – 12:30pm Lunch
12:30 – 3:30pm ET - Internal Interviewing – In-Person, Phone and Video Interviews
Internal interviewing is not as easy as many think. First, your boss probably does not know as much as you think she does about your achievements, skills and value to the team. Second, you cannot assume the job has been bequeathed to you because you are “next”.
The basic interviewing principles for an external job search are present here. So we will be discussing and practicing such topics as perfecting the resume walk, making a good first impression, answering common behavioral and technical questions, and managing the interview follow-up process.
In addition, we will be addressing such internal interviewing topics as:
Dress - Business casual
Facilitators: John Hutchings, Associate Director, Lisa Batts, Executive Coach, and Ed Kato, Executive Coach, Poole College of Management Career Center
(The CMC asks that if you RSVP, you make every effort to attend. We do know, however, that circumstances may change. If they do, please un-RSVP on 12Twenty or in the Google Calendar invite, or let your career coach know if you are unable to attend.)
