Under the supervision of the Director, Portfolio Construction and working closely with the SVP, Chief Investment Officer and other team members, the Investment Associate for Portfolio Construction is responsible for supporting portfolio research, data mining and analysis utilized to enhance the investment performance and manage the overall risk of the investment portfolios at Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH). This position will work closely with the Director, Portfolio Construction on the broad mandate of portfolio construction including driving adherence to investment policy guidelines, asset allocation objectives, risk management controls and performance benchmarks. Additionally, this position will work closely with two critical HMH teams: 1) the Manager Selection Team to evaluate current and prospective manager performance and identify potential tactical opportunities, generate new ideas, and evaluate important trends, products and strategies to optimize investment returns. And, 2) the Risk and Operations Team, to assist in the underlying operating protocols and procedures that provide adequate controls and help review and analyze performance reporting.

Responsibilties:
A day in the life of Investment Associate, Portfolio Construction at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
Contribute to the portfolio construction process by leveraging a fundamental understanding of asset allocation and manager implementation, across traditional and alternative asset classes.
Maintain and improve underlying Excel models for the purpose of estimating daily portfolio returns/exposures, analyzing various asset classes and investment strategies, calculating performance attribution, and various other investment related projects.
Support quantitative framework used to guide portfolio construction, asset allocation processes, and analytical insight needed to help understand portfolio manager, hedge fund and private equity returns. Assist with developing thematic, tactical asset allocation guidance based on current macroeconomic environment and market dynamics.
Conduct research related to HMH’s portfolio, emerging investment areas, and additional topics related to asset allocation.
Attend meetings with existing and prospective managers, run analysis and organize preparation materials.
Assist in managing operation protocols and procedures that provide adequate controls and help review and analyze performance reporting.
Support onboarding of new managers to ensure they are accurately included in all internal systems and that they will be monitored and evaluated according to established schedules and procedures.
Assist in the preparation and presentation of investment performance reports and investment fund information to the Investment Committee, Trustees, and other external constituents and/or audiences.
Support Dir, Portfolio Construction with ad hoc studies and projects such as position papers for the Investment Committee on various asset classes, investment strategies, investment managers, and the long-term performance of the fund.
Maintain a network with the leading investment practitioners, attending and presenting at conferences to exchange ideas, and to remain abreast of current trends and industry developments.
Act as ambassador to external portfolio managers by informing them of HMH’s mission and reinforcing the importance of their work to aid HMH in achieving our ambitious mission.

Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related field and with strong academic credentials.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the investment industry (buy or sell side) with a strong background in risk management, asset allocation, investment strategy and financial systems.
Advanced skills in Excel (VBA a plus), Microsoft Office and Google workspace required.
Strong understanding of all major asset classes and investment strategies including the use of derivatives.
Good understanding of statistics (regression) and financial mathematics (portfolio construction theory, performance measurement / attribution, etc).
Outstanding research, analytical and intellectual capabilities; the ability to integrate quantitative and qualitative analyses.
Intellectual curiosity as well as excellent research and critical thinking skills.
A broad understanding of economics, portfolio theory, asset allocation and portfolio construction.
Ability to anticipate issues before they become problems.
Must be able to juggle multiple assignments and execute in an effective and efficient manner.
Self-starter who is highly motivated and independent.
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Facilitator and team player who will build relationships and gain confidence of colleagues.
Highest level of integrity, honesty, loyalty and commitment.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
Masters of Business Administration (MBA) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), or progress toward advanced degree.
Working knowledge of Bloomberg and other data services.
Prior experience with portfolio construction and asset allocation.
Experience coding in Python/R.
